Governor announces the development of an appliance efficiency standards programme
New York State, United States, 8 May 2018: The state of New York through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), recently released its new Efficiency Plan, it announced through a Press communiqué.
Andrew Cuomo, Governor, New York, announced – during his 2018 State-of-the-State address – that New York would set a new target to reduce 185 trillion BTUs of end-use energy by 2025 and introduced the development of an appliance efficiency standards programme, the communiqué said. Alongside this new target, New York State is catalysing the innovation needed to bring energy efficiency into homes and businesses with energy benchmarking and new data-driven tools, State appliance standards, accelerated building codes and other efforts to stimulate advancement in building electrification and heat pumps, the communiqué further said.
The communiqué said that another priority is ensuring a substantial portion of new activities in energy efficiency benefit New Yorkers with low-to-moderate incomes. As part of this initiative, New York’s utilities will be called upon to achieve significantly more, in both scale and innovation, in their energy-efficiency activities, the communiqué further said.
The communiqué added that in order to help build the workforce for this rapidly growing industry, NYSERDA will commit an additional $36.5 million to train over 19,500 New Yorkers for clean-energy jobs.
