Growing demand for industrial cooling in the Middle East, say stakeholders

While cooling is important in terms of ensuring reliability and getting maximum performance out of equipment in data centres, power plants and gas turbines, so is air quality and, hence, the need for proper ventilation solutions throughout operations, stakeholders say

Dubai, UAE, 17 March 2019: There is a growing demand for technical cooling in the region, said Samuele Peli, General Manager Sales, Europe Middle East Africa, Seeley International Europe, during the company’s participation in Middle East Electricity, held from March 3 to 5, in Dubai. Peli said the company has seen much interest for cooling of power plants, switchgears, gas turbines and, especially, of data centres, which he said, the company is well-positioned to address.

Rehan Ahmad, Regional Sales Manager, Power Systems, Middle East and Pakistan, Camfil Middle East FZCO, visiting the exhibition, also highlighted the importance cooling plays with regard to reliability, lifecycle and performance of equipment, stressing that climate control is necessary to get maximum efficiency out of equipment. Ahmad added that importance must also be placed on the quality of air and proper ventilation throughout operations, emphasising proper filtration in this regard.

Ahmad said that when it comes to reliability of power in critical applications, such as data centres and hospitals, there is a move to invest in quality cooling solutions to avoid risk of failures. However, he said, this is more the exception than the norm, gleaning from visits of many compressor rooms and generators of other facilities during peak summer months, where he observed inadequate cooling mechanisms, which he stressed, will decrease the life of any rotating equipment. He added that it is also important to strike a proper balance in this regard. “It is okay to go for HVAC solutions to get more efficiency out of your equipment,” he said, “but how much kilowatt are you putting back to the HVAC? The savings should be plus. If you are putting more energy into the HVAC, it’s not a balanced equation.”
