Dubai, UAE: According to an official statement from the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE), H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of  DSCE, has headed the Supreme Council’s 41^st meeting, which addressed the latest updates of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Carbon Abatement Strategy, as well as other current projects and initiatives.

The meeting, the statement said, was attended by H.E. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman, DSCE; H.E. Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General, Supreme Council of Energy; Abdullah bin Kalban, CEO and Managing Director, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA); Saif Humaid Al Falasi, CEO, Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC); Abdullah Abdul Kareem, Director General, Department of Oil Affairs; Waleed Salman, Vice Chairman, Dubai Nuclear Energy Committee and Fred Chemin, Head of Production Development, Dubai Petroleum Establishment.

During the course of the meeting, Dubai Municipality, the statement revealed, highlighted its plans for treating waste through several key projects, including converting methane gas emitted from landfills into energy, recovering wastewater gas and transforming it into energy, burning solid waste to produce energy, in addition to other sustainability projects.

Furthermore, DEWA highlighted its cooperation with the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Clean Coal Centre, as a sponsor, and added that it will have access to the centre’s expertise, which includes consultancy services, study reports, analysis, workshops, conferences and databases, revealed the statement.

At the meeting, Al Tayer said that they discussed the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to provide seven per cent of Dubai’s energy from clean energy sources by 2020, 25% by 2030 and to 75% by 2050. He said, “Dubai is the only city in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) (region) to launch such a promising strategy, with specific targets and deadlines that outline the future of energy in Dubai, until 2050.”

On the subject of Dubai Carbon Abatement Strategy, which is aimed at developing an effective framework in reducing carbon emissions in Dubai in support of the Dubai Plan 2021, Al Tayer said: “Dubai Government departments implement a host of green initiatives and programmes to reduce carbon emissions by 16% by 2020. We addressed the positive results borne from limiting greenhouse gas emissions during 2015. Dubai managed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over five million tonnes, equivalent to a nine per cent reduction, exceeding the seven per cent target for 2015.”
