Dubai, UAE: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has informed that it has awarded a contract, worth AED 197 million, for the supply, construction, installation and commission of a 400 kV substation, with related works, at the Hassyan clean coal power plant. The contract, the announcement said, is part of DEWA’s efforts to increase the capacity and efficiency of electricity and transmission networks.

The power plant, the announcement said, is based on the IPP model, and will be fully operational by March 2023, generating 2,400 MW of electricity. It claimed that the plant is the first project of its kind in the region, and will be developed to the highest international standards.

According to H.E. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, “the project will upgrade and expand the 400 kV electricity transmission network, by connecting the substation with current electricity networks”. He explained that the project is part of the utility’s efforts to build a world-class energy infrastructure that meets Dubai’s development demands. Furthermore, Al Tayer said that the project supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to provide seven per cent of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2020, to make the city “a global centre for clean energy and green economy”.

“To achieve DEWA’s strategy and development projects in electricity transmission,” Al Tayer said, “DEWA continuously develops its electricity services by working to expand its projects, services, and facilities. DEWA’s future objectives are to increase the efficiency and accountability of its infrastructure, to actively contribute to the economic growth and prosperity of Dubai.”
