Company says the system utilises a water coolant instead of a refrigerant gas
Paris, France: Magnetic refrigeration company, Cooltech Applications, has announced implementing a fully equipped magneto-caloric display cabinet, for the first time, at Carrefour’s head office restaurant for a four-week period. The magnetic cooling system (MRS), the announcement explained, utilises a water coolant instead of a refrigerant gas — a major contributor to climate change. The technology, it added, totally eliminates the need for refrigerant gases, cuts energy consumption by up to 50%, reduces noise, boosts reliability and safety.
The MRS, the company revealed, is in beta testing at several sites in Europe and in the USA in various configurations, and is presently available for integration. A MRS version generating high cooling power — 20 kilowatt(kW) and beyond — is under development for refrigeration rack systems and complementary applications, it added.
“Our employees really enjoyed drinking fresh beverages from the innovative cabinet,” said Jean Michel Fleury, Project Director – International support at Carrefour. “Our intention is now to test several magnetic refrigerated display cabinets in stores. In addition to the environmental performance with no gas emission, magnetic cooling will bring significant energy savings to our stores.”
Christian Muller, President of Cooltech, added: “After successful product integrations with several display case manufacturers, we are delighted to partner with a leading supermarket chain like Carrefour. We are convinced retail stores and supermarket chains will benefit from magnetic cooling to deploy greener and energy efficient new refrigeration solutions.”
CoolTech said that both companies will continue demonstrations in stores in the next months.
