Bangalore, India, 29 October 2018: The entire building and infrastructure value chain has undergone a change, since IoT-driven automation and smart technology have come to the fore, said Deepinder Singh, CEO, 75F. Elaborating, he pointed to millennials as being attuned to factors, such as the advancement in technology, the growing need for energy demand and smart solutions in buildings. “Today smart buildings are designed to give priority to the occupant, as compared to the investor,” he said.

Singh said that over the past decade, the amount of time an individual spends indoors has increased significantly, not only in the Middle East, where air conditioning is a necessity, but the world over. According to one study, he said, we tend to spend more than 80% of our time indoors and this means that Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is given much more attention, as compared to before. “The occupant’s experience in a building is a key factor and smart technologies in buildings are aimed at improving occupant comfort, health and productivity in a workplace and residential environment,” said Singh.

Another major factor driving the shift is the growing awareness about climate change, Singh said. “Millennials want to ‘go Green’ and they understand the importance this holds for their environment.” They are willing to take the extra step towards sustainability and energy conservation, he said. However, he said that when it comes to the adoption of technology, only 15% of commercial buildings have automation systems in place and are connected to technologies that leverage IoT to sense, gather and deliver insights proactively. “Traditional controls are complex and expensive; buildings need to get smart,” he asserted. Fortunately, with smart building automation devices available today, a healthy indoor environment can be created, while they keep a check on operational efficiencies that are steered toward lowering costs and improving productivity.
